PLASMA R8 RELEASE Candidate
PLASMA R8 RELEASE Candidate
I just fond very interesting info in Russian part of forum. My Russian is very rusty, but I still remember few things and Google translate is there for the rest.
Looks like Rosa Fresh R8 with PLASMA (KDE 5) is in release candidate state. Plasma edition will be released first and KDE 4 version will be released later.
RC ISO files can be downloaded from here:
https://abf.rosalinux.ru/platforms/rosa ... ists/15631
I am just confused, why this info is not posted on English part of forum too.

Thank you very much for the info.Pulfer писал(а):There will be at least one more build (with installer improvements).viking писал(а):New build 15670 can be get from here:

I just installed 15670 on my laptop without any problem, so I guess there would be no need to install it again. I guess update should be enough.
R8 boots fine with default kernel (no kernel related problems like I had with R7).
For now, almost everything works as experted. I just have slight display issues (slight blinking in transparent window parts).

Yes, update will be enoughviking писал(а):I just installed 15670 on my laptop without any problem, so I guess there would be no need to install it again. I guess update should be enough.
Looks like a video driver related issue. Maybe switching compositing mode (OpenGL <-> XRender) may help?viking писал(а):For now, almost everything works as experted. I just have slight display issues (slight blinking in transparent window parts).

Re: PLASMA R8 RELEASE Candidate
I haven't expected anything less then that.Pulfer писал(а):Yes, update will be enoughviking писал(а):I just installed 15670 on my laptop without any problem, so I guess there would be no need to install it again. I guess update should be enough.
It is video driver related issue for sure, but it must be properly tested. Seams that compositing mode change worked, but I just tested briefly. It might be also related to Optimus somehow, since everything worked normally until using primusrun or optirun, Maybe that was just a coincidence, but it must be tested too. I will give this a proper test tonight or during weekend and eventually rise a ticket later.Pulfer писал(а):Looks like a video driver related issue. btw. I have a question about compositing mode. Why OpenGL 2 is used by default, even when OpenGL 3 is available?

Re: PLASMA R8 RELEASE Candidate
i want to ask: as soon as the R8 will be released, am i forced to make a clean install of R8? now, i am running R7. if i got right, the updates for R7 will end in the fall of 2016, no precise date is given. How long is the lifetime of R8?
Re: PLASMA R8 RELEASE Candidate
You’ll have to make a clean install only if you intend to change the KDE version (from KDE4 to KDE5), if not, you’ll automatically get R8 by the way of usual updates. Its lifetime will be two years, even though a new platform (2016, with KDE5) is supposed to be ready earlier; hopefully, by the end of this year. As to the new platform, you’ll have to make a clean install of it, it won’t come by updates.
Talk is cheap. Show me the code.

Re: PLASMA R8 RELEASE Candidate
But please note that R8 will have limited (only important security fixes and browsers) support. For new versions of software there will be rosa2016.1-based R9 (and then R10, R11 and R12) releases.Delles писал(а):Its lifetime will be two years, even though a new platform (2016, with KDE5) is supposed to be ready earlier; hopefully, by the end of this year.

Re: PLASMA R8 RELEASE Candidate
so, if i got right: the upgrade from R7 to R8 will be happening on the fly using the regular updates. but what about kernel? will i stay on actual kernel or i will be forced to jump to the kernel of R8 (assuming that R8 will receive the latest kernel)? then why the release note of R7 says that the version will be supported until autumn of 2016.....two years from now means autumn of 2018, due to the fact that R7 becomes R8 trough regular updates.
Re: PLASMA R8 RELEASE Candidate
There's no latest kernel in R8, it'll stay with current LTS (as in R7) kernel. And with individual repositories for people who want to install new kernels. You can browse them here: http://abf-downloads.rosalinux.ru/kerne ... osa2014.1/rich1974 писал(а):so, if i got right: the upgrade from R7 to R8 will be happening on the fly using the regular updates. but what about kernel? will i stay on actual kernel or i will be forced to jump to the kernel of R8 (assuming that R8 will receive the latest kernel)?
